What did Thanos do with the Gauntlet?
Avengers: Infinity War follows Thanos on his quest to fill his Infinity Gauntlet with the six Infinity Stones. Harnessing the power to control all of creation requires a pretty strong artifact and it looks like even the Infinity Gauntlet can’t handle that kind of stress for long. But what did Thanos do with the gauntlet and the stones?
After Thor thought he landed the killing blow on Thanos during the Battle of Wakanda, the purple titan survived long enough to use the full power of the infinity Stones, eviscerating half the universe’s population with a snap of his fingers.
That seemed to exhaust the gauntlet’s purpose though, because when we see it next, the once magnificent device looks charred and mangled, seemingly unusable for anyone looking to undo what Thanos did. The Stones, though, still seem to be in working order.
But from the looks of it, we may see a new Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers 4. That’s where Eitri, the dwarven blacksmith, comes in.
When Thor, Groot, and Rocket were at the smithing facility, Eitri informs them that he created the gauntlet in order to appease Thanos and protect his people. The same mold that helped forge the original gauntlet looked intact. So, if The Avengers can somehow get a hold of the stones, perhaps Eitri could make another Infinity Gauntlet to undo the devastation caused by Thanos?
In the closing moments of the film, we see a content Thanos admiring his serene surroundings with the knowledge that he successfully completed his life’s works. He seems like he’s sure that his victory is final. But while he did eliminate many of our favorite heroes, the original Avengers lineup is still intact, and you can be sure their first priority, appropriately, will be avenging their fallen teammates. And if we’ve learned anything after 10 years, it’s to never count out Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, even on a mission as daunting as getting the Infinity Stones back from Thanos.
But… what if Thanos doesn’t have the Infinity Stones anymore? Logically, the stones are still in Thanos’ possession, but does he really need them? If, after using the Infinity Gauntlet, he decided scattering the stones would be safer than keeping them together, the surviving Avengers are going to have an even tougher time undoing all the destruction the Mad Titan caused.
Either way, the stones, which can alter time and reality among other things, seem poised to play a vital role in helping the Avengers bring back their friends. If Thanos does have the Stones, then Avengers 4 will have to deal with how our remaining heroes track Thanos down. Maybe Captain Marvel can help with that? Sadly, we’ll have to wait until 2019 to find out for sure. Infinity War’s ending did make one thing certain, though: Thanos, at the very least, will return.
