ArcheAge has been around for the better part of the last decade, and while the free-to-play MMORPG has brought in plenty of players, it’s also garnered plenty of criticism for letting players essentially purchase power – which is extra frustrating given the game’s focus on PvP. ArcheAge: Unchained is out today and promises to change that.

ArcheAge: Unchained puts a premium price on access to the MMORPG, starting at $25.99 USD. From there, the game is supported purely by cosmetic purchases. The devs stop short of using the ‘pay-to-win’ moniker to describe the old ArcheAge, but today’s press release makes plenty of promises about players progressing through “skill and abilities alone” or “talent alone.”

The main monetisation system will be the ArchePasses. Similar to the battle passes popular in other modern online games, passes will rotate in three month seasons, and will be split to reward different gameplay styles. Each pass will have a free track that lets you earn all of the available progression and power items. The paid, premium track will include the fancier cosmetics and dyes
